Barbie Gym: Small Group Personal Training

Strength Training for Women over 50

Saturdays in September, 9-10 am
$260; In-Person, Midown Sacramento, CA

Over a month of Saturdays, you'll learn to use the equipment properly, find your working weights, and build strength in a way that is appropriate for your body. There's a progression, and you'll be able to see yourself moving through it.

“Barbie” because it’s little

There's a little gym on V Street. On Saturday mornings we have the whole place to ourselves — a handful of us, some 80s music, an hour of real weight training, and a lot of laughing.

What actually happens

I'm not there to unlock the door and let you figure it out. Your program for the day is on the board; we do a warm-up together and then I go over the exercises. During the workout, I'm watching your setup, adjusting your form, helping you pick the right weight, and talking you through the exercises that have seemed intimidating in the past. For the whole hour. One woman told me afterward that she hadn't realized I'd actually be helping — which is funny, and also exactly the point. Small group, lots of personal attention, alignment over ego.

This is for you if

  • You want to work out, but a big gym feels like a fishbowl

  • You've been training on your own and it's gotten lonely

  • You've done a lot of Zoom and you miss being in a room with people

  • You want feedback on your form from someone paying attention

Women who add Saturdays to what they're already doing tell me their strength goes up noticeably faster.

Working around an injury or a surgery? Come anyway. There is almost always more available to you than you think, and figuring out what — safely, without pushing through pain — is a good part of what I'm there for.

Saturdays, 9–10am

  • Dates: Oct 10, 17, 24 & 31;
    Nov 7, 14, 21 & 28;
    Dec 5, 12, 19 & 26

  • Small on purpose, usually 6-8 of us

  • $600 for the quarter ($200/mo) — any 10 of the 12 Saturdays (travel, other commitments, an off week — take two off without losing anything) ~or~ $260 single month/4 Saturdays

  • Easy parking. We're the only ones in the gym. A few blocks from the Co-op.

What women say about it

I love the Barbie Gym vibe — it's fun and low-key, but we all encourage each other and laugh a lot while doing some hefty workouts. I've progressed so much further than I imagined I could. — Lisa

It has helped my confidence both in my form and using the equipment — equipment I would never have approached otherwise. — Annemarie

Having the coaching, pointers, and encouragement is SO supportive. I am learning a lot. — Eileen

I left feeling so much stronger and more grounded than I had when I arrived. A bonus was being with such a great group of women. — Jane

I've been teaching movement for 25 years, and I've spent most of that time working with women in their 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s. What a joy to see women hitting milestone birthdays feeling stronger than ever, or travelling with confidence, or trying new things.
