For whom and when?

It's one of the most important questions we can ask when considering any kind of protocol or advice: "For whom and when?"

This is a common adage in Ayurveda and other holistic systems of health. But it need not be relegated to the medical field.

What kind of yoga class is best?

What should I eat?

Should I work out or take it easy today?

When we take all parts of the picture into consideration, we find more clear and effective insight.

For example, you might think meditation and restorative yoga are the perfect rx for everyone. But when we ask "for whom and when?" we find that for some people in deep grief, panic, or depression, those practices can actually be a detriment to their state.

Not only are we each uniquely put together, our life stage and circumstances play a role in what is going to be the best medicine for us.

Maybe this is part of the reason my class schedules have always had variety -- a little strength and stretch, some precision, some play, with a side of rest. (Hint, those are all class names!)

Finding the balance for ourselves between dedicated routine and adaptable responsiveness takes practice. Committed self-care is wonderful! Just remember that you are not the person you were 10 years ago, maybe even one year or six months ago.

What are your insights here?
