A love letter to January

Dear January,

I appreciate your enthusiasm, as you charge through the doorway of December 31 with streamers and a song. You cheer us on with gusto as we stumble out of the holiday snow globe.

I believe you are an optimist, deeply hopeful and fully supportive of our best intentions to drink more water, watch less TV and go to bed earlier.

Still… we may not be ready for your invitations.

As your cup overflows with sparkly new journals, to-do lists and vision boards… it can feel wrought with expectation. Heavy with the weight of perfectionism.

Let's add a second helping of self-compassion alongside your dreams for our betterment.

I vote for an ongoing partnership with your petite neighbor, February. A group project that we could call The Extended Start, or Easing In, or for some, a Do-Over.

It’s an anti-perfectionism approach. There is no “overhaul” or fix-it project here. Let’s be gentle as your mascot, Winter: quiet, reflective, soft, resting.

You've got a big job, January. Going first takes courage. I bow to that. Just remember, you're one vegan pumpkin chocolate chip muffin out of a dozen. You don't have to do it alone.

With love,
Michelle

P.S. Thanks for the birthday!
